In the 1970’s …Boomer women led the exodus from the kitchen to the office, where sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll introduced diversity to the three-martini lunch club. With the bulk of the buying power in Boomers’ wallets, the focus turned from the Establishment to the Young. Their energy accelerated life’s pace and marketers took note, creating faster foods, faster cars and fast cash.

  • Skyrocketed Flintstones Vitamins to category leader and headed introduction of Cling Free Dryer Sheets.

  • Created campaigns that launched new products, including: Citicard, Recipe Dog Food, Stir ‘n Frost, Head ‘n Shoulders, Quaker 100% Natural Cereal, and the national rollout of Coors and Coors Light. 

  • Gained market share for McDonald’s, V8, Sprite, English Leather, United Airlines, Tide, Kraft, Shout and more.

 

In the 1980’s…Boomers’ biological clocks were ticking but financial demands to keep up with the Joneses required two incomes, so working mothers were born. Having things replaced having time, bumper stickers read He Who Dies with the Most Toys Wins and stress became an epidemic. Business thrived, fueling Boomers hunger for more with a proliferation of new products.
 

The Boomers of Boomertising®...

  • Led marketing, advertising, research and branding efforts that generated over $750M in new product sales for Dole…increased sales for Nabisco Foodservice by 19% and Planter’s Snacks by over 50%.

  • Created award-winning campaigns, including "The Night Belongs to Michelob", "We are Coors", and for Audi of America that increased sales by 50%.

  • Brought back the Exxon Tiger…restaged Citibank’s online banking service, increasing sales by 500%.

  • Launched Bubble Yum, Carefree Gum, Breath Savers, Vidal Sassoon’s Colorific, Max Factor Colorfast Nail Care and Anti-Aging Moisturizers.

  • Created introductory ad campaigns, including Michelob Dry, achieving the highest awareness scores of any Anheuser-Busch product, Nivea After-Sun Lotion, Classico Pasta Sauces, Best Western Hotels, Suddenly Salad, S’mores Crunch.

 

In the 1990’s…Boomers began defying age, igniting the growth of health clubs, health foods, sports gear, bottled water and lite or fat free anything. They made Dockers in, rather than necessary and had Detroit disguising family vans as SUVs.  Business still fixated on the young, but Boomers moved on, still holding the biggest purse strings. 

 

The Boomers of Boomertising®...

  • Created the Dow Brands Finger Man whose recognition was second only to Santa Clause and restaged the Dancing Raisins for the California Raisin Board.

  • Increased sales chain-wide for K-Mart through sales and ad campaigns, including Rosie O’Donnell and Penny Marshall.  

  • Led marketing efforts that increased sales and profits for companies including Mrs. Smith’s Bakeries by 25%,  SPRINT by 26% and international revenues by 44%, Ortega Mexican Foods by 36% and Max Factor by 40%.

  • Conducted research and ideation for development of McDonald’s Big ‘n Tasty and Coca-Cola’s Dasani Bottled Water.

  • Introduced Top Ten New Products of the Year, including:  Mrs. Smith’s Restaurant Classics and Cobblers, Huggies Little Swimmers and Neat Sheet…and others include Healthy Choice, Slim-Fast, Nature’s Cure, Haagen-Dazs Frozen Yogurt, Entenmann’s/Oroweat Good Snack Bars, Cookies ‘n Cream Pies, Sharp’s Beer, Fresh Express Salads and Fruit.

 

Since 2000….Boomers have been redefining age. They’re making retirement obsolete, starting new families and new careers and changing the way business is done. The media began focusing on Boomers again, and marketers, still focusing on the young, began to realize that they’d lost touch with the biggest spending consumer group of all.
